Once again, you are right on the mark. Much to my chagrin, I have found myself using the Benjamin Franklin quote quite a bit in the last 7 years.

The "I'm not doing anything wrong so why should I worry" argument is infuriating. If a particular government, either present or future, wants to arrest you they can do it now for merely the APPEARANCE of impropriety. And if you are unfortunate enough to happen to stumble into an even deeper level of personal hell, they can declare you an "enemy combatant" and deny you the protection of habeas corpus, the right to face your accusers in a court of law.

The FISA law is an abomination, but even more troublesome has been the public's non-reaction to it. The responses you described are all too common and so disheartening.

I guess as long as we have our toys and gizmos to play with, none of us will notice our freedoms slipping away.

Is it any wonder that during the same week that the FISA bill was signed, Apple introduced its "iPhone G3"?

Thanks, Janice! Yes, I agree with you, too. The media does the citizens, the voters, and this country a *huge* disservice in how it covers candidates and elections. They decide what is important to cover and how, and unfortunately information is filtered down to the public in ways that do create bias. A perfect example was how everyone I talked to at my caucuses repeated the mantra that Hillary was too unlikeable to be a successfull nominee, that she was a cold, calculating, power-hungry, stop-at-nothing politician. Those are exactly the opinions Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Maureen Dowd and the like all wanted us to believe about her. Yet when I then asked them if they had watched the entire debate, or knew her full stance on a policy issue, the answer was always no. It takes time, effort, and intelligence to see beyond what the media feeds you, but it would be nice if at least the media fed fully-balanced meals once in a while!

Hi, Christianne

I find your blog thoughtful and insightful and I agree with pretty much everything you said about the blatent examples of misogyny that we all have witnessed over the last 16 months.

Unfortunately, this all springs from the method by which we get our "news." There is a whole generation out there that have only experienced the shallow ghost that passes for real news. They have been raised on "Infotainment" fuled by sound bites, petty slurs and the creation of false controversy...all of this in the service of the 24/7 news channel monsters. Real information has become the slave of news cycles and the philosophy of "If it bleeds, it leads."

We have been put in the position that we no longer really know what is true and what is "enhanced" information. So, the total substance of what makes up Hillary Clinton ends up being reduced to the examples you have sited.

I can't kick the pervasive feeling that we are all being toyed with as this ongoing crap that passes as "news" holds our collective attention captive. Meanwhile, the administration is busy dismantling the Constitution and selling our monetary souls to other countries as the corporations have their hands in the cookie jar. Hell, what am I saying? The cookie jar is long gone and we are all sitting here eating chemically enhanced synthetic food products that taste like oatmeal cookies.

The only thing that keeps me going is that I firmly believe in karmic equilibrium. I saw it happen once with Richard Nixon and I know in my heart that it will happen again. All that you speak of and all that frustrates us to the core right now will eventually be laid bare for all to see.

Anyway, I hope you don't mind my rambling. It's Friday night after a long hard work week and when I am in this mood I do tend to "go on" a bit.

Keep up the good writing and clever posts. They are a joy to read.

Janice

I've been chatting about politics with my friends here in Rio who are still American citizens. I may have swayed them to vote for Hillary if they vote at all... :-)

Keep up the good work!

YAY! It seems I can comment if I do it from my email.

This was a lovely tribute to your mom. She sounds like a wonderful woman. Happy Birthday to her!

And, we all need to thank our mothers (or at least those feminists like yours and mine) who paved the way for us. I think many young women don't know just how much they did for us. We have it easy compared to what they went through! Not that there still isn't work to be done.

Why thank you, ML! I wish I could talk to these people one-on-one and just try to really understand how they believe he would be a more effective leader than she would be. Believe me, I've tried!! So far my record's about 50-50
